Home remedies to reduce puffy eyes

Because tired puffy eyes is apart of my daily life as the mama of a little one who still wakes up to feed at night. And while I’m whipping up breakfast for my little ladies (and a a big cup of coffee for me) these at home remedies are super easy to prepare while I’m doing everything else. I’ve tried them all and they all work…it really depends what you have time to use but they are all easy and do just the trick!

An obvious one but I have to include it, drink lots of water when you first wake up (I’m guilty and have my coffee first but fill up on water right after – caffeine is so dehydrating!) Dehydration causes water retention which causes your under eye area and other parts of your body to swell. It also helps flush out toxins in our body. If I’m not in the mood to drink water, I add a slice of lemon or cucumber, it makes it refreshing and tasty!

Used Green Tea bags contain anti-irritant properties that reduce swelling and inflammation around your eye area. I know, it seems off putting – but it works. if you have time to lay down for  mins, give it a try. Put the used tea bags in the fridge for 30 minutes, lay them on your closed eyelids for about 15 minutes and your eye area should appear less swollen and red.

Cucumber slices, of coarse! It’s always what the lady in the spa scene of every movie is using! And for good reason. The enzymes in cucumbers help reduce inflammation and help tighten the skin! Place a couple slices in a tupper ware reserved just for mom so they are already cold for quick use in the am. Or slice up a pair and put them in the refrigerator for about 10 mins. Lay back and place them on your closed eyelids for about 10-15 mins or until they get warm. Maybe slice a few extra for a snack or put them in your water for a refreshing change.

Ice cubes are a fave of mine. They instantly reduce the swelling around your eye area and also gives you a wake up call! Use one ice cube and place under your eye area and your eyelid to wake up tired eyes. Yes its cold, but you can always wrap it a napkin or plastic wrap if the ice cube is too cold. It doesn’t last very long as it instantly starts melting so it’s a quick discomfort. Or you can use a bunch of ice cubes in the sink and wash your face with it and water (maybe even add some Witch Hazel a la Joan Crawford – Mommy dearest movie reference) You only need a drop or two of Witch Hazel, a natural skin tightening astringent if you choose to give it a try!

Potatoes is a new one to me that has been highly recommended. It works just like the cucumber. The starch in the potatoes acts as an anti-inflammatory that helps reduce the swelling under the eye and reduce dark circles also. Bonus! While it does take a little more work (peeling and slicing) the more remedies you know, the better. What if your out of cucumbers!?

With Love,
